What to Expect During the SLS Intake Process: A Step-by-Step Guide for Families
Starting the intake process for services can bring up a lot of questions—What should I bring? How long will this take? What happens to my information?
If you’ve already taken the first step and applied through Alta Regional Center, you’re on your way. Now, let’s walk through what to expect next, so you can feel prepared, confident, and informed throughout the process.
What Should You Bring to Your Intake Appointment?
The more information you can provide, the smoother the process will be. Don’t worry if you don’t have everything—Alta will guide you—but bringing the following can be very helpful:
Helpful Documents to Bring
- Medical or diagnostic reports
- Psychological evaluations
- School records (IEPs, assessments, transcripts)
- Previous service plans or reports
- Identification (ID, birth certificate, Social Security number if available)
These documents help paint a full picture of the individual’s strengths, needs, and history.
Tip: Bring copies if possible, and keep a personal folder for your records.
What Happens During the Intake Meeting?
The intake meeting is designed to be informational and supportive—not intimidating.
During the meeting, an intake coordinator will:
- Ask questions about the individual’s background, development, and daily life
- Review any documents you’ve provided
- Explain available services and supports
- Answer your questions about the process
This is your opportunity to share your goals, concerns, and hopes for the future. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers—honesty helps ensure the best outcome.
How Is Your Information Used?
All of the information you provide plays an important role in determining:
- Eligibility for services
- Level of support needed
- Appropriate services and resources
The goal is not to judge—but to understand. The more accurate and complete the information, the better Alta can match services to the individual’s needs.
How Is Your Information Kept Safe?
We understand that sharing personal and medical information can feel sensitive. Regional Centers, including Alta, follow strict confidentiality and privacy guidelines.
Your information is:
- Stored securely
- Shared only with authorized professionals involved in the process
- Used strictly for service planning and eligibility determination
Protecting your privacy is a priority, and your information is handled with care and professionalism.
How Long Does the Process Take?
The intake and eligibility process typically takes up to 120 days from the time the application is completed.
However:
- Some cases may move faster depending on available documentation
- Urgent situations (such as risk of homelessness or safety concerns) may be expedited
During this time, Alta may:
- Review records
- Conduct additional assessments
- Follow up for more information if needed
Tip: Staying responsive and providing requested documents quickly can help keep things moving.
What Happens While You Wait?
Waiting can be one of the hardest parts—but it’s also a good time to:
- Gather any additional documents
- Start thinking about goals and future plans
- Learn more about available services like Supported Living Services (SLS
- Ask questions and stay in communication with your intake coordinator
What Happens After a Decision Is Made?
Once eligibility is determined, you will be notified of the outcome.
If eligible:
- You’ll be assigned a Service Coordinator
- You’ll begin developing an Individual Program Plan (IPP)
- Services—like SLS—can begin to be explored and implemented
If not eligible:
- Alta will provide information on next steps or other available resources
A Reassuring Note for Families
It’s completely normal to feel unsure during this process. For many families, this is new territory. The intake process is not just about paperwork—it’s about understanding the individual and building a path forward.
You don’t have to have everything figured out. The goal is to take it one step at a time.
The intake process is the foundation for receiving services—and while it may take some time, it’s designed to ensure that each individual receives the right support for their unique needs.
At New Beginnings for Exceptional People, we know how important this journey is. We’re here to support you not just when services begin, but from the very start—helping you navigate each step with clarity and confidence.
